Choosing the correct laser? Ashburn Laser Hair
What determines the ideal laser or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) for hair removal is determined by the skin color of the person, as well as the color, thickness, and location of the hair. Choosing the correct device and the correct setting requires a great deal of experience on the part of the person performing the treatment. The most popular lasers for hair removal, in the order of efficacy, include:
- IPL with filters of 645 nm, 695 nm, and 755 nm (such as the Lumenis IPL)
- Diode lasers with 810 nm wavelength (such as the Comet by Syneron)
- Alexandrite laser with wavelength 755 nm (such as Candela GentleLase or Apogee)
.
What about the Ruby Laser?
The Ruby Laser has a very short wavelength 694nm. Which means it is more likely to cause pigementary side effects and or be painful when there is significant amounts of pigment in patients with Fitzpatrick skin types 4-6.
What about the YAG Laser? Reveal medspa, Ashburn Permanent pubic laser hair removal
The YAG laser has a long 1080nm wavelength, which means it can be used safetly in all Fitzpatrick skin types. The down side is that there is less evidence that it can induce long term hair removal. Some dermatologists feel that a YAG laser is half as effective as other hair removal methods. It is the best choice for patients with Fitzpatrick skin type 6. Pain is moderate.
What about IPL? American laser center, Lansdowne Laser Hair Removal in Loudoun
These systems deliver the widest range of light; 515 nm to 1200 nm (including yellow, green, red, and infrared light).
The quality of the light delivered can vary significantly from very short (1millisecond) to very long (1200 milliseconds) total durations and from 1 to 4 pulses or segments of light.
Most people say it feels like a pinch on the skin, even without the use of anesthetic creams. It is the only laser hair removal method that does not require anesthetic.
What about a diode laser? American laser center, Lansdowne Laser Hair Removal in Loudoun
Diode systems deliver a longer wavelength than the Ruby (694 nm wavelength) and the Alexandrite (755 nm wavelength) lasers, but a shorter wavelength than the Nd: Yag (1064 nm wavelength) laser. This longer wavelength enables the light to penetrate deeper and is theoretically safer than shorter wavelength lasers because it can better avoid the melanin pigment in the skin's epidermis. The biggest downside to a diode is that the focused laser beam is intense and can be very painful even with pretreatment with pain killing gels.
The other disadvantage of diode lasers is their small spot size which makes for very long and potentially painful sessions.
